About support for international students

the Global Education center handles support for international students who are enrolled in this university. Whether it be reductions or exemptions to study fees, scholarship applications, international study procedures, study- and daily life-related advice, or any problems that you encounter while studying here, your first port of call should be the Global Education center. the Global Education center acts as your first inquiry counter for matters related to your university life or being in Japan.

In addition to advising students, the Global Education center also organizes exchanges with Japanese students and local people. Each year, it organizes the following types of events:

  • International exchange party (4 times per year, including the newly-enrolled students welcoming party)
  • Ikebana
  • Tanabata Festival
  • Yukata event
  • Tea ceremony event
  • International students trip (1 night, 2 days)
  • Japanese language speech contest
  • Mochi-pounding tournament
  • New Year’s games
  • Calligraphy event
  • Kendo event
  • Cooking event

Consultation regarding Japanese language studies

ere at Surugadai University, we provide a variety of support and consultation services in regard to Japanese language studies for international students. Whether you have trouble writing a report, or want your research proposal written in Japanese to be checked, etc., you will be able to receive a wide range of Japanese language support.

The 2020 Employment Rate for Surugadai University International Students Seeking to Work in Japan is 73.3%.

The Japan Student Services Organization conducted a survey of international students employment prospects and degree conferment in 2019. It found that for the 2019 academic year the proportion of international students that were employed upon graduation in Japan was 56.9%. However, international students from Surugadai University fared much better at 73.5% while 87.7% of those seeking to work in Japan were employed.
In 2020, due to the pandemic of the new corona virus, more international students returned to their home countries upon graduation, resulting in 36.1% of the international students from Surugadai University being employed in Japan. However, the employment rate for international students seeking to work in Japan was 73.3%.

To find employment in Japan, it is important to know about job hunting and companies in Japan. Surugadai University has a specialized guidance and support for international students wishing to find work in Japan. Career education starts for first-year students with awareness of working. From the second year, students attend career-related seminars and events while in the third year, every international student is appointed an advisor who is available to assist them whenever necessary.

The Center will discuss what is necessary, what needs to be prepared, and how to contact companies to gain employment in Japan.

【Seminar on the Situation on Job Hunting in Japan and What to Do】
【Seminar on How to Use International Student Career Center】

The Center will provide information on job hunting and working in Japan to freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Students will learn what to do and how to contact and intern at companies.

August

Students will participate in internships.
Students take part in extra Japanese language classes.
Students will meet with Surugadai University alumni and discuss job-hunting in Japan.

September and October

【Fall Semester Guidance on Employment for International Students】
【International Student Career Center’s Seminar on How to Gain Employment】

The Center will discuss what to do with fourth-year students who have not found employment and promote consultation with advisors to restart job hunting.

November through January

【Guidance on What to Do for Employment in Japan】
International students will learn about the job-hunting process in Japan, and how to utilize the Career Center Support System.
The Center will inform students of what Japanese companies expect from international students and the benefits of working at Japanese companies.
The Center will explain what international students should prepare for, and how to improve motivation in order to be competitive with Japanese students.
【Job Application Form Course 1】
The Center will assist students in filling out the job application forms, in particular what to focus on in the “Writing about University Life” section. This course will also include an introduction to PREP.
【Occupational Seminars – We will learn about the types of jobs and different ways of working!】
The Center will discuss what Japanese employers are looking for, and how to show your strengths.
【Business etiquette course for international students】
Students will learn the manners and ways of thinking necessary for job hunting and dealing with companies in Japan, including grooming, greetings, language, business Japanese, and responding to telephone calls and emails.
【Non-Japanese Employment Service Center Internship Information Session】
Checklist for getting a job offer, how to participate in an internship at the Employment Service Center for Non-Japanese, and find out what support is provided.
【Interview preparation course】

Find out how interviews are conducted and how to act. Learn about the typical questions asked and how to respond appropriately.
【On-campus Industry Research Seminar】
Consider what it means to work at a Japanese company, listen to HR personnel in each industry, and clarifying what industry and company might be best for you.
