Izu Spring 2023

グローバル教育センター 准教授 T.Rucynski(英語担当)

We set off early from Ikebukuro on a cloudy morning with 37 students. Everyone was in good spirits and looking to discover an area of Japan they had not yet visited.
Our first stop was at the strawberry farm. There were two delicious types of strawberries, and both were very sweet. After 30 minutes, we could not eat any more no matter how tasty they were. The farmer there was very kind and helped some the students take the perfect instagrammable photo. We were fortunate the rain had not started falling so after eating most everyone took pictures in a field of Spring flowers.
The next stop was at the zoo. The rain was falling heavily by now and the views were very limited. Still spirits were high as we were able to see capybaras in hot springs. They looked warm even though most of us were not at that point.
Lunch was prepared for us and was a good mix of sashimi, rice and vegetables. The restaurant was uniquely decorated with clouds painted on the ceiling above stuffed flamingoes floating. Stuffed capybaras were occupying every other chair to help us maintain a safe distance.
After that, we further explored the zoo. There were many kinds of monkeys, and the smaller ones could be fed for a small price. Llama feeding also proved to be a hit with the students as many paid the small price to feed them.
It was cool and rainy most of the day and we surely missed out on some beautiful views but, all in all, the day was fun because of the good food, rare animals, and interaction with classmates. We all look forward to visiting Izu again on a sunny day.
