I am studying materials development with an emphasis on English educational video. Classroom English with quizzes, tests and a focus on grammar is often remarkably different from authentic English communication outside of the classroom. Having produced videos for 30 textbooks in the past 15 years, my goal has always been to find a way to create authentic English experiences for students inside the classroom. I will continue to research how students react and engage in English learning video materials in the classroom.

英語教育ビデオを中心に教材開発の研究をしています。クイズやテストと文法に焦点を当てた授業内英語（Classroom English）は多くの場合、 授業外で行われる実際の英会話とは大きく異なります。これまでの１5年間で30冊もの英語教育に関わるビデオを製作し、生徒が授業内で実際の英会話を体験できるということを常に念頭に置いています。今後も生徒が授業内で英語学習のビデオ教材に対しどのように反応し参加していくのかということについて研究を進めていきたいと思っています。

My job is to find out what English means to my students. Do you want to use basic English to be able to communicate at a future workplace? Do you want to study abroad or even live abroad in the future? Or do you learn just enough to get credit and move on with your major of study? All of these types of students are here at Surugadai.

私の仕事は英語がその生徒に対しどのようなものか、何を意味するかを見つけることです。「将来職場で役立つような英語を使いたいですか？」「留学を考えていますか、または将来海外に住みたいですか？」「単位取得に必要な英語だけ学び、専攻科目の学習へと進みたいですか？」駿河台大学にはこれらの全てのタイプの生徒がいます。

I think what makes me most excited about teaching is watching the transformation of some first-year students who can barely speak English become fluent speakers 5-10 years later. My role is to be the catalyst and help students to realize their full potential. Each year a handful of students clearly see that they want to use English in the future. When this happens, I want to guide them, to show them a path that will allow them to realize their dream.

英語教育において私が最もやりがいを感じる時は英語がほとんど話せない生徒が5年、10年後流暢な英語を話せるようになる変化を見ることができた時です。私の役目は自らがきっかけとなり、彼らの十分な可能性を生徒に気付かせることです。毎年、将来英語を使っていきたいと強く思う生徒がいます。そのときは私が先導し、彼らが夢を実現できるような道筋を示したいと思っています。

For six years I had a TV audience when I was fortunate enough to be a commentator on NHK’s ニュースで英会話. My goal there was introducing interesting content, news stories, so that viewers would want to study English more and ask questions. At Surugadai, the goal is the same. Every class should have fun and interesting content and, better than TV, students will have the opportunity to express themselves in English!

幸運に恵まれ、私は6年間ＮＨＫの「ニュースで英会話」でコメンテーターを務めていました。視聴者の方々がもっと英語を勉強したい、質問をしたいと思ってくれるような興味深い内容、ニュースストーリーを紹介することが私の役目でした。駿河台大学でも私の役目は同じです。全ての授業はテレビよりも楽しく興味深い内容を提供すべきであり、生徒が英語で自身を表現できるような機会を作るべきだと考えています。

English is a tool for communication. It is up to each student to decide how they want to use that tool. What I can promise is that I will be available to guide you in that journey at Surugadai University.

英語は会話の一手段です。英語をどのように使っていきたいかを決めるのは皆さんです。駿河台大学で皆さんがどのように英語を使っていきたいか見つけられるように皆さんを案内し導きます。
